Parenting Tool: Pennies In Your Pocket

One way to measure the amount of praise and encouragement you are showering on your children is to grab a handful of pennies and place them in one our pockets (if you don't have pockets, try jars). And every time you say something nice to your child, for example, "Good for you!", "I'm so proud of you!" or "I love you", take one penny from your pocket and place it in the other (empty) pocket. By the end of the day you should have no more pennies in the first pocket. Conversely, for every negative comment, take a penny away from the second pocket.

Your child deserves to hear you sing his (or her) praises.

Just a thought.

  2. Thanks Michelle, as parents we tend to only focus on giving our kids a visual reminder to be good, for example a chart with stickers, but as parents we also need to be reminded to be "good" to our kiddos! Thanks for sharing! happy B day!

  3. Love it! Remember too that children feel loved in different ways, words, service, quality time, gift and physical touch. I love the idea of the penny. It would be cool to do a jar and work to gether as a family!

  6. I love this! Super idea! Some days I feel like I haven't said anything nice to anyone all day long. That would be great peace of mind to have concrete proof, yes I did love and encourage my child with praise today.

  8. What a fantastic idea - I know I struggle with feeling like I am more of a coach than a cheerleader to my kids. This is a great way to accentuate the positive - which is what they need lots of right now.

  10. Cute idea, except honestly...sometimes I think I praise my kids too much. I used to think there was no such thing as too much praise, but I don't want them to always expect it, you know?!

  12. Good idea!

It is very important to always praise, encourage and show love to our kids.

As we get bussy in our day sometimes we don't always remember so this penny idea sounds like a great reminder.
