These gorgeous cardboard stars are fairly simple to make and have a definite "wow" factor! I'm using mine to make a mobile in the kids room, but they would make a beautiful addition to any Christmas Tree and I'm sure you crafty ladies out there can imagine other fantastic uses for them! This is definitely a craft for mom (although kids can help sprinkle the glitter). Want to make some?
Things You will need:
- empty toilet paper rolls (each roll makes about one star)
-scissors
4. Do this all the way around until you have your desired shape (5 rings make a star and 6 make a flower). Let dry completely.

- glue, the school liquid variety
- clothes pins
-spray paint (Cheap kind from Walmart in White)
-ULTRA FINE glitter (I used green/white)
Directions:
1. Cut the toilet paper roll into 3/4 inch "rings" (see photo below)
I made several stars and let them dry completely, before I went on to the next step...
.5. Spray paint each one in whatever color you desire...I chose white
5a. Spray with spray adhesive. (Some commenters who tried just the spray paint said the glitter didn't stick well to the paint. So I added the step in to spray with spray adhesive.
6. Sprinkle it with glitter lay it out on wax paper or somewhere clean, cool, and dry and let dry for an hour.
7. Grab a cup of iced coffee, relax, and marvel at how crafty you are!

These are beautiful, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'd not be surprised if I end up making something like this! After 5 years plus, I have yet get tired of snowflake theme.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what end result would be if I glued finished product to a round white paper doily and then trim it to desired pattern? What about two TP flakes glued together with doily like a sandwich but flakes not lined up (think 10 point snowflake)?
very very cute!

ReplyDeleteWhen we move, the girls all want to redecorate their rooms. This would be such a cute project for them to do themselves. They could each make a mobile for by their windows OR garlands for their headboards!! Oh, the possibilities are endless!

ReplyDeleteWow! These are beautiful! I love the glitter. I never saw your original post. I hope you were not too upset I didn't have it linked. I was being lazy that day! It is linked now. I am so happy you emailed me with the link. I will have to try the project like it was originally intended. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have been meaning to find a tutorial for these. My daughter needs to make these to finish up a mobile for her new bedroom! Thank goodness for "you might also like...." widget! And thank you for this awesome tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I think I'm going to make some into snow flakes and some into poinsettias.
ReplyDeleteHere's a tip for gluing them together. You can use a hot glue gun. It works great for heavy paper like this and then you don't have to use clothes pins or wait long for the glue to dry. Can you tell I get impatient?
What an excellent idea to turn these into an ornament. I have seen a lot of these flowers popping up all over but never made into something I would love to use. We will definately be making these!
ReplyDeleteHi and greetings from Finland ! I have also been inspired by toilet paper roll shapes myself. Very nice to develop something beautiful of such material that is very inexpensive and overwhelmingly available! ;)
ReplyDeleteI created a web album to be able to share mine with you:

These are the most beautiful handmade, recycled things I've ever seen! I have had them in my to do file for months now and finally got around to making them now that it is Christmas. They are the perfect addition to our tree this year! Thanks for the great idea and I hope you don't mind if I add a link to your post on my blog.

ReplyDeleteThank you ^^
My family does an ornament swap every Thanksgiving and my girls love to make their own. Guess what we will be swapping this year!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteLove it!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteif you did red glitter they could be pointestta's!
ReplyDeleteHow do you get the spray paint to stick? When I spray them with white Krylon it just rolls right off.
ReplyDeleteI used the cheap no name spray paint from walmart and apply an even coat. Hope that helps.
ReplyDeleteI just tried these and failed miserably!! The spray paint would not stick to the cardboard and the paint is now a part of my fingers until it wears off. :) I handpainted mine with acrylic paint and it worked better for me, but it dried super fast so didn't get the glitter on quick enough! I may try again, but they certainly weren't as easy as you make them look...lol... Thanks! I think I will still mention them on my blog (tiztheseason.wordpress.com) because they are just darling! Monica@tiztheseason.wordpress.com
ReplyDeleteI must be spray paint challenged as I couldn't get in all the curves. But watering down white paint and dipping them worked great! Love them! Thanks for the great inexpensive idea!!!!
ReplyDeleteHi there
ReplyDeleteI made these with my class of 3-4 year olds. I cut the cardboard and stapled them and the kids painted them in lots of different colours. Once they dried the kids put pvc glue on them and sprinkled glitter on them. They turned out great and the kids were super proud of them!
Thanks for the great idea,
Miriam, Ireland
A Key part of this project is ULTRA FINE Glitter and cheap white spray paint from Wal-mart.
ReplyDeleteI made these flowers and other strips of toilet paper to make a picture frame! It looks really awesome on my red wall.
ReplyDeleteI hot glued them so we didn't have to wait for them to dry before decorating. Then, the kids painted them with the washable Crayola paints and then we sprinkled glitter on them. They are beautiful. Oh, we also used a paper towel tube instead. Thanks for this idea!
ReplyDeleteI used cheap spray paint. It kept soaking into the pieces, had to apply many coats. It also helped to hold the snowflake midair on a pencil through the corner, and then rotate the pencil through each one, to get full coverage with the paint. Wish I'd known about superfine glitter working better. Our glitter was "fat". They turned out okay, but not great.
ReplyDeletethanks for the idea. i changed it up a bit and let my daughter paint each paper ring with metallic paint and then i later put glow in the dark paint on them. they'll be little decorations to hang in her room. photos on my blog if interested - http://smiliezzworld.blogspot.com/2012/02/stars.html.
ReplyDeleteLove the glitter idea! I make these and glue them together into massive wreaths. Then I spray paint them black, makes them look like iron wall art. One tip for everyone...hot glue gun. Super easy, dries instantly, no clothes pins needed.
ReplyDeleteHi there! I thought that this was so great that I featured it in my "100 Jolly Christmas Crafts & Decorations"! Have a great day! http://www.aspectacledowl.com/100-christmas-crafts-decorations/
ReplyDeleteVery Cute! I made about two dozen last year with a girlfriend from Mexico. We kept them white or red, and added two green leafs to look like poinsettia's. They were so fun to make, and looked beautiful as well.
ReplyDeletethank you for posting this..i am going to make a bunch of them..and put them together to make a christmas wreath for my front door..i think they look like snowflakes which will be perfect with a snowman ribbon for a hanger..if i can figure out how to do it i will post a pic when i get my wreath finished.
ReplyDeleteAMAZING! Last year, my husband and I bought a tent gazebo for our North Garden. I have been looking for something to hang inside the gazebo for Christmas and I JUST found it! Thank you for posting this.
ReplyDeletecookingcraftingcreating.blogspot.com
This may seem a silly question but do you 'sprinkle with glitter' when the paint is wet or do you brush on glue and then sprinkle?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite step is #7 :)
ReplyDeleteI love these made them years ago with my granddaughter and just store them in a shirt box with tissue paper. Only thing different i did was while glue was still wet i dropp them in a bag of artificial snow. They really glisten.
ReplyDeleteCan I use another type of glue other than spray glue?
ReplyDeleteI will be making these for my baby shower. Great idea!!!
ReplyDeleteSooo Nice, Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI knew I was saving these toilet paper rolls for something.
ReplyDelete
