Muffin Tin Monday: Creative Food Ideas For Toddlers, Preschoolers and Beyond

It's Monday! And time for the weekly blog link up called Muffin Tin Monday. I get asked all the time "Why a Muffin Tin?" The first thing that comes to mind for me is "Why not?" But for those of you that are wondering, Here are some quick benefits to serving MTM's:
  • breaks up the normal lunch time routine
  • great for picky toddlers and preschoolers
  • muffin cups provide smaller kid-sized portions
  • a way to introduce new foods in smaller sizes and in an interesting way
  • a way for me to express culinary creativity
There is research out there that supports the idea that kids who eat foods labeled/adorned with popular characters is more likely to be purchased and consumed....So why not serve healthy food in an interesting way to combat this pervasive advertising? Would love to discuss this more....anyone?

This week for Muffin Tin Monday there is NO THEME.

Here's what we did. After I snapped a photo, I realized how brown and orange the meal was! Another reason I love MTM. Snapping a photo helps remind me of the foods my kids are getting. Need more greens this week.

sort of a decontructed Lunchable: tangerines, cheese cut into a spider and butterfly, crackers, baby carrots, salami and ranch dip

Now it's your turn. Add your link by clicking the blue "Add your link" button. New to MTM? Be sure to check out the Muffin Tin Monday FAQ page for ideas and how to get started. You don't need to have a blog to participate and you don't need to stick to the themes-they are merely a guidline.

  1. Loving the cheese spiders and the crinkle carrots...so cute!!

  2. I also like how the compartments in the muffin tins challenge me to come up with not only a variety of foods, but also to have foods from all the food groups. On a plate, I slap down a hot dog, and maybe a cheese stick, and call it good. In a muffin tin, I see the empty holes and remember to find a fruit and/or veggie too!

  3. Looks awesome! I agree with the PP too--even with bentos, I fill the spots, but I can always add extra of the same thing. The muffin tins force me to come up with 6 unique items or it drives me crazy! ;o)

  4. First time trying this for my 15 month old twins... so far so good!

  5. Love your post today along with the picture. It definitely emphasizes the need for color in our diets. I'm not a great balanced meal eater and I really try to do better for my kids. This really helps.

I love the spider cheese. I've really liked your posts for MTM's lately.

  7. Wow this is amazing. I love all of the ideas and can't wait till I get to try it. My daughter is 4 and we just started to having problems plus she loves to help with everything so now she can help and she might eat and get what she needs. I'm telling all my friends this. Also an idea, cut out pictures of their favs to fit in the bottom and laminate then. Then when they finish eating that food they can see the pic. I do to her crackers in a lunchable and she loves to see which one I put in there.
